Episode 24: Enter The Sandman

FROM THE ETERNAL SEA HE RISES.
CREATING ARMIES ON EITHER SHORE.
TURNING MAN AGAINST HIS BROTHER.
UNTIL MAN EXISTS NO MORE.

INT. RYAN’S FAMILY HOME- BASEMENT- CELLAR- DISTORTED (DIARY OF A MADMAN BY OZZY OSBOURNE)

We open to a small decrypt cellar. Saws and other work tools line the room. We pan back to reveal a teenager, MATT RYAN, 18, pale as a ghost, gaping mouth, pitch black eyes staring towards the wall. His eyes turn to the right and left. He closes his eyes and his mouth forms into a wicked grin. He stands up. ANGLE DOWN to see dust on the ground. Matt turns towards the work bench. He walks towards it and takes a GUN. He studies it, looking it over. He glances up towards the ceiling. ANGLE DOWN towards him. Eerie. He looks back towards the gun. In the back, behind the cellar pipes is a shadow of a MAN in a trench coat watching. We hear indistinct whispers. “No mercy.” “Betrayal.” “Lies.” Tears flow down Matt’s eyes. Matt walks towards the door and opens it. He steps out.

EXT. RYAN’S FAMILY HOME- NIGHT

We see a small suburban home. Eerie. Wind blows against the leaves.

INT. RYAN’S FAMILY HOME- KITCHEN- DISTORTED

Matt walks through a twisted looking kitchen. Very disturbing. Shadows dance on his face. He closes his eyes. We hear a SCREAMING woman’s voice.

WOMAN
Why won’t you just leave!!!

Matt turns towards pictures on the refrigerator. A happy family. Matt, his mother (CAROLYN), father (MATT SR.), and two brothers STEVE (7) and JACK(10). The pictures gradually become distorted and decayed. The picture comes alive!!! Wind howls in the back of the frame and thunder STRIKES against the ground. Carolyn turns towards the frame, looking at Matt. The voice of the screaming woman was Carolyn!

CAROLYN
Die. Die. Die.

Matt Sr. stares towards his son.

MATT SR.
You know what to do. Make us proud.

WHOLE FAMILY
Make us all proud.

Picture Matt’s eyes light up. The picture ignites in flames!!! Matt walks away.

INT. RYAN’S FAMILY HOME- STAIRCASE- DISTORTED

Matt walks up the stairs and towards the second floor. CLOSE UP on his eyes. In a trance. Pitch black. Dead. Matt continues to escalate up the stairs.

FLASH CUT:
INT. RYAN’S FAMILY HOME- BOY’S BEDROOM- DISTORTED

CLOSE UP on the tip of a gun. BANG! CLOSE UP on blood splattering against the wall. CLOSE UP on Steve sleeping peacefully in bed. CLOSE UP on Matt’s blank black eyes. BANG! ANGLE VERTICAL DOWN to see Matt looking into his brother’s bedroom. Blood everywhere. Matt turns and walks away. We see the shadow of the man inside the bedroom.

MAN
Yes! Yes!

FLASH CUT:
INT. RYAN’S FAMILY HOME- PARENT’S BEDROOM

Matt stares towards his parents sleeping. Tears fall down his eyes. He aims the gun towards Matt Sr.. BANG! Blood splatters. Carolyn wakes up, startled. Carolyn feels the blood against her face. She screams and turns towards Matt.

CAROLYN
What’s going on?!

INT. RYAN’S FAMILY HOME- PARENT’S BEDROOM- DISTORTED

Carolyn’s eyes light up on FIRE as she stares towards her son.

CAROLYN
You’re pathetic. You know that? You’re not my son. You’re a disgrace.

Matt gulps, as he holds back tears.

MATT
I’m sorry Mom.

Matt walks towards Carolyn.

INT. RYAN’S FAMILY HOME- PARENT’S BEDROOM

Carolyn cowers back. Eyes normal.

CAROLYN
What are you doing?!

Matt approaches her.

MATT
Shh… shh… no more.

Matt presses the gun against her forehead. Carolyn cries. Overcome with grief.

CAROLYN
You don’t need to do this. We can still get you help.

CLOSE UP on Matt’s finger pressing against the trigger.

MATT
I’m sorry.

CLOSE UP on Matt, in the reflection of his eyes we see Carolyn SQUIRMING around TERRIFIED. BANG! Blood splatters onto his face. Matt points the gun to his head and closes his eyes. BANG! Blood splatters through. CLOSE UP on his eyes opening, oily black. SAND rushes out of his eyes, deteriorating into nothing but gaping holes.

EXT. RYAN'S FAMILY HOME

The wind picks up speed as we...

FLASH CUT:
SUPERNATURAL: ENTER THE SANDMAN

FLASH CUT:
EXT. DINER- AFTERNOON (SHATTERED BY THE ROLLING STONES)

The camera angles down to a small diner at the corner of the street. We see two attractive female joggers jogging past the screen. Dean checks them out.

DEAN
(to joggers)
Hey… hi… how you doin’?

Sam, meanwhile, is flipping through the newspaper. He clears his throat. Dean sighs and rolls his eyes.

DEAN
Find anything?

SAM
Yeah, I think so.

Sam hands Dean the newspaper. TEENAGER COMMITS MURDER/SUICIDE.

SAM
Two nights ago Matt Ryan, age 18, killed his entire family and then committed suicide.

DEAN
So? A depressed teenager, it’s normal…

SAM
Normal? Check this out.

Sam lowers the paper back onto the table and points to a paragraph.

DEAN
He was found with his eyes burned out of their sockets.

Dean nods as he looks around.

DEAN
This is definitely our type of gig

Sam nods

SAM
Yeah.

Sam takes back the paper

EXT. CEMETARY- RAINING

PRIEST (O.S.)
Our dearly beloved, we gather here today to mourn the death of loved ones. A family tragically taken before their time.

Pan around to see Sam and Dean at the funeral in suits. Dean fidgets around in his suit, it’s obvious he doesn’t like it.

DEAN
Man, did I really have to wear this monkey suit again?

Sam sighs as he keeps his head lowered

SAM
Shh…

Dean snickers and rolls his eyes. Dean lowers his head. The wind begins to howl, Dean turns to his side and catches a glimpse of a Black Dog staring down towards them from a close by hilltop. He shivers and turns his attention back towards the funeral.

LATER:

We track the casket being lowered into the ground. DAN JACOBS, 18 years old, watches. A tear comes down his eyes. Sam notices. A woman approaches him and places her hand on his shoulder. Unaudible dialogue. Dan nods as the woman walks away. Sam approaches him. Dean stays off to the side.

SAM
Hey.

Dan turns around.

SAM
Did you know him?

Dan nods. Sam extends his hand.

SAM
Sam, cousin from out of state.

DAN
Dan, Best friend.

SAM
Is it true what they said- about Matt? That he killed himself and murdered the family?

Dan shakes his head no.

DAN
There’s no way he could have done what the police are accusing him of.

SAM
Why do you say that?

DAN
Matt was… paranoid. That’s granted. But, he wasn’t crazy.

SAM
Paranoid?

Dan nods

DAN
He thought that his parents wanted to kill him, that he was a disgrace to his family or something like that.

SAM
Is it true?

DAN
Is what true?

SAM
Did his parents want to ‘kill’ him?

DAN
Heck no.

SAM
Were they abusive to him?

DAN
Dude, they were the nicest people I’ve ever known. Matt was the one who kept them going.

SAM
Then what made Matt think they wanted to kill him?

DAN
I don’t know. He was taking meds.

SAM
He was on drugs?

DAN
Prescription. His quack put him on them.

SAM
Matt was seeing a psychologist?

Dan nods

DAN
He started to become- different. He would isolate himself. Became paranoid. Almost of everyone.

SAM
Any idea what could have caused it?

Dan shakes his head no

DAN
No clue, the change it was- it was instant. Something triggered, something happened and he just snapped.

SAM
What’s this psychologist’s name?

DAN
Dr. Miles Irving.

Sam nods as he jots it down.

SAM
Thanks for the help.

Sam walks off and approaches Dean.

DEAN
What was that about?

Sam hands Dean the pad of notes

SAM
Turns out, Matt was seeing a psychologist.

Dean nods

DEAN
No kidding.
(beat)
So, what now? We head over there, find out what he knows?

Sam nods

SAM
Something happened. We just need to figure out what.

Dean glances back up towards the hill. Sam looks. Nothing.

SAM
Dean, what’s wrong?

DEAN
Nothing.

SAM
Nothing? You’ve been glancing up towards those hills since we got here. What is it?

DEAN
Let’s get out of here.

They enter the Impala and drive off. ANGLE TOWARDS the hilltops, the Black Dog stares down towards them, saliva drooping from its mouth.

[b]INT. IMPALA (ENTER THE SANDMAN BY METALLICA)[/b]

Sam is at the driver’s seat. Dean stares out the window. Sam glances over towards Dean- something was definitely off.

SAM
You’ve been hiding something from me from the start. I need to know what happened. What happened to me after the car crash?!

DEAN
Nothing. You fell into a coma, end of story.

Sam shakes his head no

SAM
There’s got to be more to it than that. Time’s missing- I’ve been trying to put the pieces together and nothing makes sense.
(beat)
I need to know.

DEAN
You already do know, you just won’t accept it.

Sam shakes his head no

SAM
It doesn’t make sense!!!

DEAN
Because you don’t want it to!

SAM
No, because-

DEAN
Sam, drop it.

SAM
Dean, I-

DEAN
I’m serious Sammy. Leave it alone. I don’t want to talk about it.

Sam frowns as they drive on- in silence. Sam grasps his head and screams in agony.

DEAN
Sam!!!

FAST CUT:
INT. WINCHESTER FAMILY HOME- SAM’S BEDROOM-FLASHBACK

We see Young Sam laying in his crib, a man stands over him. Watching. But, we already know this is no ordinary man- it’s the Demon. Mary enters and turns on the light.

MARY
John?
(beat)
John is he hungry?

MAN
Shh…

MARY
Okay.

Mary walks off. We pan around the room so that we can finally see the man face front. Cloaked in shadow. We pan in closer and closer. At first we can only make out the yellow demonic eyes, but soon we catch a glimpse that we cannot understand. The man is- Sam Winchester!

FLASH CUT:

INT. IMPALA

Sam’s eyes SNAP open. The Impala is pulled over to the side of the road.

DEAN
What is it?

Sam looks around, not knowing what to say.

SAM
I… I don’t know.

Dean looks at Sam concerned.

DEAN
What did you see?

SAM
Mom… I, I killed her.

Sam looks at Dean, frightened. For once, Dean didn’t know how to respond.
